BMI is also known as Quetelet index or body mass index. It’s calculated by body mass (weight) divided with the square of your body height. It is expressed in kilograms/m2, kg/kg and metres.
Your BMI will determine whether you are underweight, normal, overweight, or obese. You have a higher risk of developing certain cancers such as type 2 diabetes, stroke, osteoarthritis and coronary artery disease. The risks are very high.
This is a serious problem in America, with 2/3 of Americans being obese or overweight. Overweight refers to a high body weight. This could be due to bone, fat and muscles, as well as water. An excess of body fat is generally referred to as obesity.
Internationally, BMI is recognized as an indicator of total body fat. However, there are some limitations to consider:
- It may not be possible to take into consideration muscular build or overestimate fat levels in athletes.
- It is possible for seniors to underestimate the amount of fat due to muscle loss.
